Good web site I have been a Scenicruiser fan since 1954 and I can
remember PD 4501-002 which was on display in St Petersburg, FL in
1954 at The Greyhound bus station.
My dad was a Greyhound bus driver and over the years I have been
on and around the scenicruiser's since then. I recall the old power
packs with the 2-4/71,s and the change over in the early 60,s to the 8v/71.
The best bus that was ever built. It could be compared to the 747 in
bus terms. Thanks for the interesting bus web site. jlv

Has been inactive for approximately eight year, basically sound but
needs extensive cosmetic attention.

Purchased in Texas in 1995. Owned by a charter company from 1970 to
1972 and then by the same family until I purchased it. Originally
converted in 1972. I think it may be the only Scenicruiser in Alaska.
The former owner installed roof airconditioning in place of the skylights,
which I think is unattractive and blocks the view out of the upper
windshield. I would like to find some original skylights to return the
bus to original, also upper windshields. Mine both have rock chips in them.
Otherwise, the bus is in good shape. I don't plan to do much with it until
I retire in 4 more years, then do some serious travelling outside in the w
intertime. I've spent 30 winters in Alaska and am getting tired of the
cold and dark. Any information/discussion on Sceinicruisers, history,
parts sources, junked busses, etc. would be welcome. Even though it's
not the most practical bus in the world to own, I really like it for it's
uniqueness. It's my first coach (I've got a motorhome and schoolbus
conversion) but it was also my first choice when I began looking. I found
it advertised in Bus Conversion magazine.

What's amazing is; I have almost all of info on bus from the day it
rolled off assembly line to present. It was converted in 1977 and still
in terrific condition, everything works and on the road it still has legs!!
Sure is a head turner, especially in truckstops and rest stops.

I bought my bus in '97 and began to convert it to a motorhome. The
conversion was started 8 years earlier when it was purchased from
Greenlawn Transit Co. in Ohio. They had just put a new engine in it.
Greenlawn had purchased it from Greyhound , as far as I know.
Right now I am in the process of reversing the polarity to neg. ground,
and fixing the air leaks. Then its windshield, lights, roof paint , an
go get it inspected and on the road.

Purchased my bus about 5 years ago
for $15000 - have since almost completed converting it, including a 10KW
diesel generator, 2 roof air units and all the "usual" goodies - galley,
seating areas (top and bottom) restroom w/shower, etc. etc. etc. Better
than a Chevy to "See The USA"! May have to sell it soon, as I just have
too many projects. Would consider offers around $25000 - what I actually
have in the bus (who really gets paid for labor, anyway?).

I posted this on the "comments" page also...

Let me start by saying that I am VERY MOTIVATED to sell these buses.

I have 3 Scenicruiser buses available at this time.

I would like to sell at least 1 Scenicruiser bus in the next week or 10 days.
You will never get as good a deal as you will now.
Buy one or all.
I will make a you a very good deal for one.
Excellent deal for more.
Can make you a heck of a deal on the entire inventory.

I don't mean to put pressure on you to make a decision.
The pressure is really on me to sell at least one bus.

Make me an offer!!!

Let me know soon...

If this time frame is too soon for you please give me a call when
you do become a serious Buyer and I will be happy to
negotiate a sale for what may still be available.

There are not many of these Old Dogs still around in any kind of
condition.
These are much better than average.
These have never been converted.
I looked at many, many Cruzrs before I found these.
If you need more information please call me.
It gets to be too much to write down!

If you need more information or additional photos let me know.

GM PD4501-510
Never converted. Still has most of the seats, restroom, etc.
95% complete and original.
DD8V71 engine and 4sp transmission (repairs less than 60k miles).
New air bags.
Other recent repairs.
New roof-top air conditioning unit.
6.5kv generator w/ remote start.
Good Title.
Drive it home.
$12,500 MAKE OFFER!!!
Located in Northwest Montana

I drove #141, the red one home from FL
I drove #510, the blue/wht one home also.
I bought #189 originally to use as a parts chassis.
After seeing this bus I had second thoughts about parting it out.
It really is pretty straight.
This was a bus that was being used by a Canadian marching band.
It was kept up to Canadian regulations.
It was in service until the engine was removed for use in a different
chassis.
Then the front windshields were removed.
Another DD8V71 w/ Jake has been installed. (Installation not completed)
(Engine is supposed to run good, but has not been confirmed)

Engine and rear side doors are in the bus for storage.

It needs most of the glass replaced.
It needs other cosmetic repairs.

Rust and corrosion seem to be better than average.

This is the PD4501 parts inventory that I have available (98% complete).

GM4501 Scenicruiser inventory:

1. PD4501-141
2. PD4501-189

This is 98% of the Scenicruiser inventory that I have.

Also available:
*ALLISON 750CR automatic 5 speed transmission (low 1st gear) with retarder.
Completely "renewed" , not just rebuilt.
NEW transmission cooler (still in the crate).

*Very good used Greyhound "dog" nose emblem.
May consider selling as part of the complete inventory.

I have spent years getting all of these rare and original parts together.
No parts available until the last bus has sold.
Make me an offer for the entire inventory and I can make you one heck of a deal!!!
I will consider ALL "FAIR AND REASONABLE" OFFERS

Sharpen your pencil.
I hope that we can negotiate a sale to everyone's satisfaction.
I will negotiate the price when I see a "real" offer.
I am definitely motivated and willing to try and work a Purchase out with the
Buyer.
Let me know what you think.

I am getting a lot of interest in these buses.
They are nice ones!
If you might be interested in the entire inventory, including all of the 4501
parts, I would encourage you to take a look at these while they are still
available together. It would be difficult to find 3 Scenicruiser buses in this
condition all together in one sale.

Bottom line...
I want to sell, are you a Buyer???

May consider a trade (even/up/down +/- $$$)
Looking for-
small dozer with 6-way
or
rubber tire loader 1 1/2 - 2yd

Thanks again for your time and interest.

I am just becoming interested in doing a bus conversion. My best memories of
'busing' are in a scenicruiser in the 60's. So of course I gotta have one.
Seems there is too little information and too few coaches available. Do you
have any resources to share with me? An help would be appreciated very much.
I found a coach in CA of $15,000. Don't know enough to be sure this is a
good deal. Also found a group of three in various stages of disrepair. Hopefully
you have listings for others who are "nuts" for these coaches. I would like to
be introduced to or at least pointed in the right direction to meet these folks.
Thanks for any help you can make available. How is your conversion coming?
Post some more pictures, would like to see your progress.

Mine was converted to a Motorhome by someone who had obviously

We were in Jackson, MS on 11/11/00 for the weekend and across the street
from the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Downtown Jackson, is the old Greyhound station
lovingly restored inside and out keeping the full Greyhound motif by an architect firm.
They even kept the long bus parking spaces in their parking lot! All they lack is a
fully restored Scenicruiser or two to make the scene complete. This building is now
their office building. So, if any or you Scenicruiser owners out there happen to be in
the LA, MS, AL area, it would be well worth a visit... and I am sure the archetects would
love to see your rig in their parking lot!

I am not an owner myself, but in the late 50's and early 60's I rode scenicruisers
all over the Western US. They the best bus ever made.

GM4501 Scenicruiser inventory

1. PD4501-141 SOLD!
2. PD4501-189 $3,500/offer Originally bought for parts. After getting this
bus home I found it to be straight enough to build. It would be a major
project from the ground up. It has less than average rust and corrosion.
Interior is pretty well stripped out of it. No seats, etc. A lot of the
glass needs to be replaced but is available NEW. The engine is a DD8V71
with Jake brake.. It is supposed to run but has not been confirmed.
This shell would be great for parts or for an RV conversion. Referrals for
   shipping can be made.
3. PD4501-510 SOLD!
4. Shop / Maintenance Manual (NEW)
5. Operator’s Handbook (NEW)

Today is May 11, 2001. I have a nice scenicruiser. I like but need to sell. Its in
good shape. Its currently on ebay. Its solid thing have been fixed as needed.
Structure, air tanks radiator, miter box, air bags, bushing and more. It can be put
back to nearly original or can be finished to a motor home as I have started to do.
This bus does draw attention and rightfully so. I think they were ahead of there time
in 1956. My was based I think in Lexington Ky. and ran from Cal. to Fl. Its route
scroll has names like limited, special, and more. Its amazing that the alley lights
and reading lights still work. No plastic. Later

A friend just made aware of this unique w/s. I may have missed it but there is no reference
to the original s/c which had 2 GM diesels and the big lawsuit between Greyhound & G.M. re
transmission problems, caused by the 2 motors.

I rode these buses a number of times in the East. Pittsburgh-New York City.
South Bend,IN - Pittsburgh.
On the South Bend trip we were leaving South Bend and the driver deviated for some
reason from his normal route. I was seated up front as always. There was an overpass
coming up and he asked me to go upstairs to check if he had adequate clearance.
On the same trip I recall when cruising the Turnpike he would nudge the trans. shift
lever to gain some additional speed.

Purchased from Greyound by All About town tours in Washingtion DC in 1976, used for a
couple of years, saw a couple more as a motorhome than converted back to a bus by a
Pittsbutgh Pa charter co in 1986 and re engined, I bought the bus in 1989 and took it
to NCW Coach works in Frederksburg Va for restoration in Greyhound livery and operated
it in charter service as NOSTALGIA TOURS.

In 1991, PeterPan buslines chartered my Eagles on a daily basis to run as extra service
from DC to NYC competing with Greyhound for the DC to NYC hourly service. The fares
dropped to $9.00 per person RT NYC Dc and Peter Pan asked me if I had another bus.
I told them that i did but it was the Scenicruiser and it was in Greyhound colors with
the comlete hound slogan on the side "It's such a pleasure to take the bus and leave the
driving to us" They said we don't care get it down here,, so it went into daily service
DC to NYC leaving from the Peter Pan Terminal right across the street from hound in DC..
when 4300 got to NY Port Authority there were many Hound drivers and brass standing st the
curb watching her come in..many pictures were taken..here was a 39 year old Greyhound
Scenicruiser back in daily scheduled revenue service in direct competition against them.
Who would have ever thought. 4300 made over 20 round trips druing the Peter Pan DC NY
startup, it was a big hit with the passengers.
A few mounths 4300 went to the movies as herself but a quirk of fate turned the tables on
Hound again. It was hired as a hound to appear in the Julliet Lewis movie "That NIght"
Well the night before shooting, Hound went on strike and the producers got a
telegram,,Permission to use thw Greyhound name not permissable during the strike.
What to do.. so I called JOhn Hobine of Blue Ridge Trailways and got permission to use
the Trailways name. So thats why in the movie "That Night" there is a blue and white
Scenicruiser that says TRAILWAYS BUS LINES on the sides. We showed Hound. Sorry about
that history buffs..what a sin huh? Well 4300 retired from charter service in 1995
after doing lots of charters all over the mid atlantic stated and many many airport
transfers from Dulles and National Airports in Washington DC to NYC during bad weather.
I retired "ha ha" and moved back to Orlando Fl bringing 4300 with me,, she has been in
storage for 4 years and is now being cleaned up for sale or who knows mabey another
movie,, it aint over yet old gal, you're still looken and runnen good

Iwas a mechanic for Southern Greyhound LINES in the Miami shop from 1960 until 1970.
I spent most of this time rebuilding the scenicruisers from top to bottom. My specialty
was the bulkheads and the steel side plates and of course anything else that needed to
be reworked. Most any bus person will tell you that Southern Greyhound really maintained
the coaches in their division. Have a good day. Ron

Just been bitten by the "Bus Bug". Any plans for owning one will have to wait until I
retire from the Army. I remember a couple of trips in a Scenicruiser in the late '60s
or early '70s. My dad was being shipped off to Vietnam, and Mom and us kids were going
to live in Hawaii with my grandparents. Of course any young boy with a sense of
adventure HAD to sit in the front of the upper deck. Somewhere in the junk my parents
store for me are photos I snapped of the San Francisco skyline using my old Kodak
Instamatic. That big window made for some interesting viewing. I don't remember
how long it took to ride from San Fran to Travis, AFB. I do remember the disappointment
of getting off of that beautiful machine.

Bought in 1996 and have been converting in spare time for full time living. We dropped the
floors down to the same level all the way across. Have rewired and repowered with 8V92 w/ 750
Alison auto. The inside is about done other than a little trim work. In the process of finishing
the body work and painting. We have updated the front to dual square headlights with stainless
panels that we had to make, also have reworked the back with stainless and updated the taillights
with late model style double taillight system. Have installed a rear cap that we customed built
to fit opening.
Any questions e-mail us as we have a few windows and window trim that we have removed.
Also, have other parts that we will not be using. Looking for the bus # before and after #804.
Bought from Shiloh Baptist Church out of Atlanta GA.

This is it! The Big Dog! The King of the Road! 1956 GMC Super Scenicruiser PD4501R-0821
professionally converted to a motorhome in 1975 by Liberty Coach, Inc. in North Chicago, IL.
Not an amateur hack job. In 1995 the cost of a new Liberty Coach first exceeded 1 million dollars.
Seats 19, sleeps 4. Makes an excellent party bus with lounge area, built in ice maker and blender,
and filtered water. Four new tires (12.00x22.5) on driving axle, 5 new batteries, new clutch ($3500),
hitch, 12k Onan diesel generator, 4 AC’s (1 original coach and 3 internal AC’s – no bulging roof AC’s),
5 roof exhaust fans, separate shower, electric refrigerator/freezer – no need for propane gas.
Why buy a project bus and then get discouraged and give up part way through the conversion like
so many others? This bus is a finished professional conversion. Have all manuals.
Located in Oxnard, CA. For sale at only $30,000. Call Gary at (805) 278-2486 or
e-mail swing.dancer@juno.com.

I have always been interested in the scenicruiser of long ago.I have never owned one outright, but
looking at them on the road throught the years,I would surely love to own a 1956 scenicruiser,
because of the style and also that was the year I was born. You see I have owned a 1966 GMC motorhome,
back in the early to mid ninetys.I traded a 1986 Ford Escort for it.That was my first encounter with a
motorhome.Right now I own a 1978 Dodge Explorer Mini Motorhome.I have owned it for two years,and I
think its about time for a Luxury Motorhome.I am not saying that some of the new ones arent bad ,
but they will not take the place of the older ones by a long shot.If any one is out there who would
be interested in selling one of those magnificent machines for a reasonable price, say between 5,000.
and 10,000.-+. I would go up to 30,000.for a pristeen one.It would be greatly appreciated.

660 BECAME BUS 5505. ONLY ONE ID CAN BE LOCATED. THE DASH PLATE IS 660 BUT IS NOT RIVETED
IN PLACE. SEVERAL PLACES ON THE COACH INDICATE THAT IT WAS NUMBERED 5511. THIS WOULD
INDICATE THAT THE NUMBER IS 4501 680. ANYONE KNOW OF RECORDS THAT WOULD HELP TRACK THE
HISTORY OF THIS BUS? INFO APPRECIATED LEN

This is it! The Big Dog! The King of the Road! 1956 GMC Super Scenicruiser
PD4501R-0821 professionally converted to a motorhome in 1975 by Liberty Coach,
Inc. in North Chicago, IL. Not an amateur hack job. In 1995 the cost of a new
Liberty Coach first exceeded 1 million dollars.
Seats 19, sleeps 4. Makes an excellent party bus with lounge area, built in
ice maker and blender, and filtered water. Four new tires (12.00x22.5) on
driving axle, 5 new batteries, new clutch ($3500), hitch, 12k Onan diesel
generator, 4 AC’s (1 original coach and 3 internal AC’s – no bulging roof AC’s),
5 roof exhaust fans, separate shower, electric refrigerator/freezer – no need for propane gas.
Why buy a project bus and then get discouraged and give up part way through
the conversion like so many others? This bus is a finished professional conversion. Have all manuals.
Located in Oxnard, CA. For sale at only $20,000. Contact Gary at swing.dancer@juno.com.

Although I do not have a Scenicruiser, and in fact, have only
ridden on one back in 1964, to me, they were the best motorcoach
to ever run the highways. Even the new G-Series MCIs and the
great-looking intercity buses used by the tour and charter
companies don't come close. Keep up the preservation of this great vehicle!

Dear Sirs: I just found your site after about an hour online. I just bought a
1970 GMC Senicruiser Bus, 40'. We just finished pulling the seats out of it.
It is to be, " our Dreamweaver". And since we own 3 large dogs, motels
are out of the question. I am however at a stand still. We can not find a manual
for the bus, or something that will show all the accessories already in the bus,
ie., the huge Trane A/C, an electrial diagram. Is there any help out there for us?
My husband, (a professional truck driver-about to retire ), and I will be converting
ourselves. We were EXTREAMLY lucky to find a bus that has had the entire engine,
drivetrain, air bags and a/c completely redone. We will appreciate any direction
that you would be able to point us in. Thank you so much.....Sincerely,

This began my love for buses. I played drums in an old gospel quartet based in
Atlanta back in the mid-70's and we had a 1959 as our tour bus. I remember it
being painted several shades of blue with a sparse (read: semi-pro quartet budget)
interior. We dreamed then of a model 01 or 05 Eagle like the 'big-boys' had
but disbanded before that could happen.
In later years I went on to drive a Model 15 45' tour coach and am presently
driving a Prevost XL/2 entertainers coach. My love affair with buses lives on.
Thank you for this site as it brings back lots of fond memories.

Hello Scenicruiser Fans!

I never thought I'd find a Scenicruiser web site! How Cool IS This!

I traveled quite a bit on the Scenicruisers as a kid, age 9 to 12. They really were the 747 of busses then.

I've never considered owning one until I found this site and learned a bit about them. Mostly I've been restoring 1950's boats.

Thinking about retiring a few years down the road, a converted Scenicruiser might be just the ticket.

For those of you that own Scenicruisers, but have never been aboard the twin 4-71 Jimmy powered version, well, being a gear-head, the twin engine Scenicruiser rates (by me) as the number two best mechanical sound ever made by machinery.

Number one, is a Roll Royce Merlin V-12 in a P-51 approaching at low altitude and full power. The sound of the supercharger and roar of the exhaust stacks is enough to send a shiver up your spine.

In 1957, we were departing Seattle aboard a Scenicruiser. We were the only ones aboard, so the accoustics were completely open. We hit every traffic light, so there were a lot of stops and gear changes. As a kid, I was enthrawled at the sound of the twin engines mechanically synced together.
The twin superchargers were a symphony of sound. I'll never forget it!

Not mentioned in the specifications is the electric overdrive. In addition to the four speed transmissions, there was a toggle switch on the gear shift ball. Electric overdrive. On long hauls, I'd stand beside the driver and watch him. If he wanted to pass, he'd hit the overdrive switch (disengaging it)and we'd pass.

At only 210 horsepower, the busses were plenty fast. I remember the speedo well above 70 much of the time!

Great site. Hope to find one, preferably a completed conversion. Don't need to start another big pr
